10/07 - There will be a college fair for those students interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) careers.  Come and talk to colleges and university representatives about their STEM degree programs. Attend a workshop to learn about internship and career opportunities from STEM industry professionals. This is free and open to the public. The local fair will be held on Sunday, October 7th, with interactive exhibits at 10:00 a.m.  The fair and workshops will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  The location is the Santa Clara Convention Center.  Arrive early to avoid the 49er home game traffic. Go to their website,  www.nacacfairs.org/silicon-valley-stem, for a detailed map and travel routes.  Register at GOTOMYSTEMFAIR.COM to recieve fair details, avoid lines onsite, and share your contact information with your choice schools.

We’re very excited to announce an upcoming Perry Outreach Program on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles in Los Angeles, CA. The Perry Outreach Program is a free, one-day, hands-on experience for high school women who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and engineering. Students will hear from women leaders in these fields and try it for themselves by performing mock orthopedic surgeries and biomechanic experiments.
We are now seeking applicants for our Los Angeles, CA program. Participants should be women in grades 10 and up with an expressed interest in science, medicine and/or engineering.  We would very much appreciate if you could pass this information along to any high school principals, high school science teachers or high school students you may know.  Applicants should be directed to fill out our online application in advance of theNovember 15, 2018 application deadline.

HOMEWORK

  1. Go home and find out what kind of medical insurance you have and why you parent or guardian chose it.  Ask your parents how much it costs your family per month, total per year, what are the co-pays etc... It will not be long before you will all need to get your own health insurance. Have parent sign off that you discussed health insurance with them.
  2. Watch THIS Seinfeld that brings humor to HIPAA, when was HIPAA enacted? When was the video created?

Day 4 - Careers in Medicine

Thank you all for a great week! You should have now turned in all of your immunization and CPR paperwork in addition to any TVROP paperwork that is required.  


You have two ongoing assignments that you need to stay on top of. Please make time for these long term assignments and do not wait until the last minute to complete. Anticipate your own needs and make sure you stay on top of your research paper and your Bulletin Board topic!

HOMEWORK

  1. Come with 4-6 names of people you have researched and sound like a good "fit" for you to do your pioneer in medicine research paper on. First come first serve. There will be a clip board at the front of class to write your pick down!
  2. Study for he quiz! - Handwashing, ASL, Syllabus!
  3. Check out THIS link - watch a minimum of two of these TED talks on the spread of infectious disease and prevention of a pandemic. Be ready to report back to the class your thoughts and ideas on each of the videos!
  4. Don't forgett he binder check is tomorrow as well!

*DRESS FOR SUCCESS - Dress for Success means to dress as though you were going to a job interview on days of quizzes and test to earn extra credit. I realize that LHS and AVHS have rallies tomorrow and GHS and DHS have rallies next Friday, with that in mind you can either dress this week or next and earn double points, but ONLY if you dress in spirit gear the other following week!

  1. Practice and teach someone ASL at home for 20 minutes, take a 30 second video of your "student" performing their new skills or a post it note from good old mom or dad (with their signature) saying you practiced for a full 20 minutes.
  2. Finish the Principles of Infection Control and if you think you need it make flash cards for the vocab!
  3. Don't forget your Anticipate Your Needs Poster is due tomorrow!

Day 1 - Catch Yourself Being... Yourself

HOMEWORK:
  1. Catch yourself being... You! Be ready to share three things that you became aware of about yourself, ask others about feedback on you - what do you do well or that needs to be improved in your interpersonal skills?
  2. Keep practicing how to properly wash your hands!  THIS video will show you the proper technique. Notice, they turn the water off with their elbows because of the handles that they have, but we will not always have those so take your drying paper towel and once finished turn off handles.  You will have a quiz on it Friday!
  3. Print out THIS packet on Principles of Infection Control and read through it by Wednesday! Make sure to highlight any important info. Keep it stored under professional resources.
  4. Buy some flashcards - a few packs of the multi-color type - they should be in class by Friday! Flashcards will be checked with binders on Friday!

  7. Complete all appropriate paperwork and have it ready to turn in!

If you are reading this you have found our new blog for the Medical Occupations Class 2018-2019.  I am very excited to meet you all in person next week!


Welcome to our class blog, where you will find all pertinent info for our class. I update our blog daily! On our blog you will find nightly homework, ongoing assignments, and upcoming events.  You MUST check the blog nightly and sign your name into the comment section.  I am SO pumped to be your instructor this year!

PARK IN STUDENT LOT, PROCEED TOWARD CAMPUS. MED OCCS IS LOCATED IN THE VERY FIRST BUILDING FACING THE STUDENT PARKING LOT.  DEPENDING WHAT TIME YOU GET ON CAMPUS YOU MAY HAVE TO WALK ALL THE WAY AROUND THE FRONT OF THE SCHOOL.  



Here is a list of what is required for this class by MONDAY 08/20:
  1. TWO copies of your immunization records/checklist from orientation
  2. TWO copies of your CPR card - front and back
  3. Pens and Pencils
  4. Three - 3-ring binders (1", white/window front)  Print out one page for each binder.  Each binder has its own title: CLASSROOM, COMMUNITY CLASSROOM, AND PORTFOLIO (center of the page).       Click HERE for a link to the binder cover sheet - you will need to change out those portions that are highlighted!
  5. Color pencils or color markers for projects, as well as a highlighter or two
